Legacies: Autonomy and Belonging
Here's a post that I found by Isabel Rimanoczy over her Legacies blog: I found an interesting paragraph in a chapter by Sharon Daloz Parks, in the book Can Ethics be Taught?. She indicates that individuality and freedom are the greatests achievements of modern culture, but we have fallen into a trap of individualism, which defends values of autonomy, personal competence, achievement and freedom to a point that now frightens rather than empowers us. "We have lost sight of the relationships between the individual and the social system, between freedom and responsibility". Yet, she observes, the individual fulfillment for most is still connected to finding a personal, meaningful place in a community. Her reflections point to the submerged value of being connected to others, establishing relationships that enrich our lives through giving and receiving. Interesting, that we strive so much for autonomy and freedom, and yet gain our deeper satisfaction when being valued, appreciated or needed by others, when we experience belonging...

What is a friend?
What is a friend if not someone who does not judge me, who does not abandon me when he discovers my weaknesses, limitations, wounds, shortcomings, everything that is broken within me? A friend is someone who sees my true beauty and potential, and who wants to help me to develop them. A friend is happy to be with me. He feels joy in being with me.

3D Dialogue: L'Arche, produced by Jesse Hirsh
Here’s an interview Jesse Hirsh did with Carl MacMillan from L’Arche Daybreak about the organization and it’s founder Jean Vanier. To quote from the L’Arche website: “In L’Arche, people who have developmental disabilities and those who come to assist share life and daytime activities together in family-like settings that are integrated into local neighbourhoods. L’Arche in Canada has nearly 200 homes and workshops or day programs.”
